Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third daughter of their family. Her father, who was a carnival barker, died at the age of a tiny little girl. This forced her mother to support the family by working as an attendant and a cleaner. Ruth lived in a slum Boston tenement neighborhood, Massachusetts. She went to school in the area. After only two school years the young woman left to pursue an acting profession. The path she chose to take turned out to be fraught with difficulties and in New York, she obtained a job posing for stills in a magazine for crime However, the stage was not a match for her. She then worked as an hat-checker at a night club before calling it quits and returning to Boston. She made the ends meet by working with her ushering duties throughout the day, and at night performing with the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. Her studies in drama led her to earn her degree at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
